OUR SPECIALTIES / ADAPTIVE LIGHT

Photochromic Smart Glasses

A different light. The same pair.

From indoors to the outdoors, light-adaptive lenses change with your surroundings. Explore included photochromic lenses or customize an eligible frame with prescription options.

LIGHT-ADAPTIVE LENSES

The lens responds to light.
The frame connects to your phone.

Photochromic smart glasses combine light-adaptive lenses with audio technology in the temples. UV-responsive lens chemistry darkens when exposed to outdoor UV and lightens as exposure decreases. The response is optical chemistry, not a command from an app or a battery-powered switch.

Light-adaptive lenses can be convenient when you move repeatedly between indoor spaces and the outdoors. Music and calls continue through your paired phone while the lenses respond to the light.

There are two distinct ways to shop at SmartRx: order an eligible frame with custom prescription light-adaptive lenses, or choose a Shift model with included non-prescription photochromic lenses. Start with your vision needs, then choose the frame.

Explore the light response

Select an environment to see the principle.

Less UV. A clearer lens.

UV-responsive lenses lighten as UV exposure decreases. The change takes time.

More UV. A deeper tint.

The lens darkens outside in response to UV exposure. Temperature and lens design affect the result.

A windshield changes the equation.

UV-filtering glass can limit darkening. Check the specific lens if daytime driving is a priority.

Illustration of the principle, not a tint preview or a timed performance test. Individual lenses behave differently.

TWO ADAPTIVE OPTIONS

Choose how your lenses respond to light.

For custom prescription orders, compare our Photochromic option with branded Transitions® GEN S™ lenses. Both darken outside and lighten indoors, independently of the frame battery.

REAL-WORLD EXPECTATIONS

What affects the lens response?

01

Time to change

A lens does not jump instantly from clear to its deepest tint. Darkening and fading are processes, and their timing differs by product and conditions. Do not assume a transition time for one brand applies to every photochromic lens.

02

Temperature and exposure

UV exposure, temperature and lens material can all influence photochromic performance. A shaded area, a bright window and direct outdoor exposure can produce different results even when the surroundings look similarly bright.

03

Behind a windshield

A windshield filters much of the UV that activates many photochromic lenses. Darkening may be limited in the car. If daytime driving is a main use, consider a dedicated prescription sun pair and review the specific lens information.

UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE

Adaptive, tinted and polarized do different jobs.

Choose by the light problem you want to solve.
Lens feature What it changes What to check
Photochromic Changes tint in response to light conditions. Activation, fading, temperature response and performance behind glass.
Fixed sun tint Provides a consistent tint indoors and outdoors. Color, darkness and suitability for when you will wear it.
Polarization Reduces certain reflected glare from surfaces such as roads or water. Whether polarization is included in your exact custom lens configuration.
UV protection Filters ultraviolet radiation. The lens’s UV specification; tint darkness alone does not establish protection.

These features are not interchangeable. A photochromic lens is not necessarily polarized, and a dark lens should still have an appropriate UV specification. If glare control is your priority, explore our prescription smart sunglasses page before settling on an adaptive option.

BUILD A PAIR AROUND YOUR ROUTINE

Start with the places you spend time.

Choose by your main use: frequent indoor-to-outdoor changes favor an adaptive lens; extended bright outdoor use may favor a fixed sun tint. Reflected-glare reduction requires a separate polarization choice.

If you need distance and near correction, explore the progressive route on an eligible prescription frame and check which adaptive finishes can be combined with it. The optical design, lens material and light response are separate decisions that must work together.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

Four useful questions.

  • Do I need a prescription or the included non-prescription lenses?
  • Am I often moving indoors and outdoors, or mostly staying outside?
  • Is driving or reflected glare a major part of my day?
  • Which lens options are offered for my exact frame and prescription?

MAKE IT YOURS

How to order

  1. Choose your vision route

Decide whether you need custom prescription lenses or an included non-prescription Shift configuration. The routes are labeled on the frame cards.

  2. Select your frame

Compare style, measurements and product details. Prescription shoppers should choose an eligible frame with the lens selector.

  3. Review the lens choice

For a custom pair, select the available adaptive option, material and color. For Shift, review the included lens specification on the product page.

  4. Check the finished configuration

Confirm the prescription details where applicable, exact lens type and total before checkout. Do not assume the standard product photo shows your custom finish.

THE DETAILS

Frequently asked questions

Do photochromic smart glasses need battery power to darken?

The UV-responsive lenses described here do not use the frame battery to change tint. Their light response continues independently of the connected audio features.

Can I order photochromic smart glasses with my prescription?

Choose a prescription-eligible frame and review its lens selector for available adaptive configurations. The Octane Shift and Nitrous Shift listings featured here are sold with included non-prescription lenses only.

Are all photochromic lenses Transitions lenses?

No. Transitions is a lens brand; photochromic is the general category. An included photochromic product should not be assumed to use Transitions technology unless the product specification explicitly says so.

Will they become fully dark inside a car?

Do not assume that they will. Many photochromic lenses depend mainly on UV, which is reduced by the windshield. The amount of activation varies by lens. Review the exact product information if driving performance is important to you.

Do photochromic lenses also reduce reflected glare?

Changing tint and polarization are different properties. A lens is not polarized simply because it darkens outdoors. Check whether polarization is specified for the exact lens you are choosing.

Can I combine progressives with light-adaptive lenses?

Check the lens selector for your chosen prescription frame. A progressive design may be combined with an adaptive treatment where that combination is available and suitable for the prescription. Explore progressive smart glasses.

What changes if I order a custom lens color?

The finished appearance is determined by the custom lens option, not the included lens shown in the standard frame photograph. Available colors and pricing are shown during selection; the illustration on this page is not a color sample.
